How to Read This Page

Grand tournaments are held six times a year (January, March, May, July, September, and November), each lasting 15 days. This page looks back at the most recent tournament that has finished through its final day, highlighting not only the champion but also records that characterized the tournament from several angles.

The three special prizes (sansho) are awarded to top-division wrestlers ranked sekiwake or below who performed especially well. The Outstanding Performance Prize (shukun-sho) goes to a wrestler who influenced the title race, for example by defeating a yokozuna or ozeki; the Fighting Spirit Prize (kanto-sho) to a wrestler who posted a strong record with spirited sumo; and the Technique Prize (gino-sho) to a wrestler who displayed outstanding skill. In some tournaments a prize is not awarded, and in others one wrestler receives more than one.

The "Rank Riser MVP" is the wrestler who climbed the most from the previous tournament, the "Win Streak MVP" is the wrestler with the longest run of wins within the tournament, and the "Biggest Upset" is the win by a lower-ranked wrestler across the largest rank gap, all extracted automatically from match results. Unlike the special prizes, these are not official awards but records compiled independently by this site.
